The Difference Between ASCAP And BMI
From Artists House Music: In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Todd Brabec is the Vice President and Director of Membership for the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He talks about the differences between ASCAP and BMI. One of the main differences is the reason each organization was founded. ASCAP is a writer and publisher owned organization dedicated to enforcing the copyright law. BMI is a corporation owned by the broadcasting industry. The two organizations also differ in other ways such as payment formulas. Also in this segment, Brabec stresses the affiliation regulations. Writers have to join one or the other. However, writers are free to switch to the other organization. The significance of a good relationship with foreign societies is covered as well. Brabec also focuses on the importance of having a contact at the performing rights organization (PRO). Also in this segment, he offers some advice. Brabec recommends knowing information such as the PRO's philosophy and if they pay correctly in certain areas.
Fellow songwriters, this is Anthony Lloyd, leader of Electric Chair 3000, and a professional songwriter. (Yes, I have received songwriter royalties, thus, I am a professional songwriter.) Dear songwriter, please join BMI, ASCAP or SESAC, these organizations are here to help you get your due royalties.
Personally, I don't care which one you join, that's your business but you should join one of them. As it says in the video, do research the PRO, performing rights organazation, before you join.
As of 2011, I am a member of BMI. BMI is home to Mariah Carey, Rhianna, and Taylor Swift to name a very few of the thousands of artists who claim BMI as their PRO.
What else should you songwriters do? Learn to copyright your songs and join Sound Exchange and The Harry Fox Agency. More on those organizations in other posts.

Electric Chair 3000 was born on Mp3.Com many years ago and called Crowdpleaser. We also had an offshoot group called Teflon. Well, those names are now taken by other bands and then EC3000 was born.
We currently have over 100 songs in our catalog and will release as demand grows.
If you have any questions about the group, our sounds and our future, please leave them in the comment section below.

Electric Chair 3000 at Audiosparx
This is Anthony Lloyd again and I'm here to blog about my relationship with Audiosparx. What is Audiosparx? Audiosparx is a music publisher. They provide music for movies, television, corporations, commercials and such. Chances are that you have heard a song published through Audiosparx as they have provided music for CSI Miami, The Good Wife, NCIS and many other television shows. Plus they have published songs that have been used by Warner Bros, Disney, HBO, Pixar and New Line Cinema among many many others. Don't take my words for it, following this link to see their recent license deals.
In late 2009, I joined Audiosparx and now they one of the publishers for my many songs. Like any reputable publisher, it's free for any songwriter to join. Follow the big link below to see a part of the Electric Chair 3000 catalog. Please, take all the time in the world and listen to every song there and let me know what I'm doing right or wrong. In advance, I'll thank you for you compliments and I have thick thin so I'll take your criticism in stride.
How is it having Audiosparx as a publisher? Even though I haven't had what I call big sales, I have enjoyed it. Two of my songs (Queen Pacific and Bollywood Jam) have been chosen to present to a major corporation to use in their in-store service and two others (Slam Slam Slam and X-Static) are currently featured on two compilations thanks to Audiosparx relationship with music distributor Rosenklang. The two compilations Energetic Disco Dancing Volume One and A Collection of Asian Pop. (They use our old name Electric Chair or The Electric Chair on these compilations. I will post more on these compilations later. )
Before you join any music publisher, you should join a performing rights agency such as BMI or ASCAP and also, join Sound Exchange. These agencies will collect your songwriting royalties from radio, television and live performances of your music plus Sound Exchange will collect money owed to you from satellite radio, Internet radio and non-interactive digital transmissions. Follow the links to get more details.
Then I suggest you copyright your songs. Currently, this is done through the Library of Congress and costs you $65 a song if you mail your material and $35 a song if you do it online. Follow the link to get more details.
Finally after the above steps, I would seek a music publisher. In my case, it was Audiosparx.
First go to the site and read the licensing agreement. READ IT. As I stated before, it is free to join.
The following is clipped from the Audiosparx site:
1. Read Licensing Agreement - You can read our Vendor Licensing Agreement text by clicking here (popup window).
2. Register - Take a minute to register online for free by clicking here (popup window). After registering and logging into the site, submit a new Artist Application (from the "Submit New Artist" option at the bottom of the Client tab of the MyAudioSparx Menu). We review all new artist applications within 48 hours and will email you with our decision about whether to represent the artist you submit the application for. You can submit multiple artist applications if you represent music for multiple different artists for whom you would like to sell content at AudioSparx.
3. Upload Tracks - If you are accepted as a new artist at AudioSparx, you can upload tracks one at a time, or use our powerful batch upload and batch edit features to upload dozens or even hundreds of tracks at once. After uploading, configure each track with price, description and keywords (optional), and for music tracks you can optionally configure relevant moods, styles and other helpful information to make it easy for clients to find your tracks quickly. The better the configuration effort, the better the results!
4. Run Reports - You can run real time reports for any time period to see how many plays and sales your tracks are getting.
5. Get Paid - After the end of each calendar quarter we email you a report that details all sales for the previous quarter, and then shortly thereafter we send payment.
This link will give more in-depth detail on how to join AUDIOSPARX.
The people at Audiosparx have been extremely helpful with me and many other artist on their sites. Whenever I send an e-mail with a question, it is answered ASAP with thoughtful insights. They want to sell all of your songs if possible because they will get fifty percent (as do most music publishers unless you're the publisher) of your sales and royalties. If they don't sell your songs, you get nothing and they get nothing. Nobody wins.
Like any successful venture, the more work you put into it the more you will get out of it. The most successful songwriters and artists on Audiosparx have uploaded many songs, written great descriptions of their songs, can write in many genres, and have high quality production of their songs. These songwriters work hard to shape and mold their songs to the needs of the customers. To be a successful songwriter, you must work harder than the ones who sell multiple songs. It's not easy but it can be done.
With the help of the staff at Audiosparx, I know I am on my way to being a successful songwriter.
